This week, the ladies are joined by Gretta Vosper, the openly atheist Minister of West Hill United Church in Toronto. Gretta came out publicly as an atheist in 2013, although she stopped believing in a supernatural, all-powerful god some years before. While the United Church is what Gretta describes as “probably the most progressive Christian denomination in the world,” she felt it needed to evolve even more until it became a “theologically barrier-free church,” one that uses no bibles in worship and eschews traditionally religious language among other things.
Gretta has faced a lot of criticism and weathered a lot of controversy for her views and style of ministry, but as her Twitter description says, she’s determined to “irritate the church into the 21st century. It appears she’s doing a pretty good job of it! Indeed, the United Church has taken steps to “review her effectiveness as a minister” in her church, even though she has led her congregation for over 20 years and they are pleased with her leadership and the community they have built together.
While Gretta’s future in the church is uncertain, she remains committed to furthering new ideas and demonstrating reason and critical thinking in the church.
